I connect with the idea that my life is like a work of art. It’s an ongoing lesson in perspective and relationships. Texture, color and value make the journey a rich adventure that frequently challenges my imagination, igniting my creativity.
Painting has been at the core a life time pursuit; although like most of us I have taken many detours. I consciously made an effort toward that goal in college graduating with a major in Art, knowing this was a space that felt like home. However, there were years afterward where painting was an infrequent visitor. I became a wife, mother and more for awhile, always archiving experiences but not knowing where they might lead or how they might impact a future body of work.
Both the landscape and still life have drawn my interest since returning to full-time painting. This decision came at a poignant time in my life. The security and tradition of routine I was used to became disrupted, putting me on a path of something far less certain. The time came where it seemed appropriate to risk a bit more and commit fully to my art. This experience has often felt like death and stepping into an abyss of unknown. Little did I know then that this was what I needed to experience and what I continue to need in order to create and grow as a human being and artist. Painting ultimately provides me with a context for this process.
As I search for a place of connection within a landscape or still life there is risk in bringing my experiences to the canvas. The surface makes no promise or guarantee outside of providing a field where I can communicate. I retain an affinity for tradition as a ground work for branching out and creating something new and more personal. With that said, my work over the past couple of years has become significantly different. The shapes and spaces have become more meaningful as ways to simply carry color. These expressions are closer extensions of my innermost self and the abstract nature of change which is so integral to creating.
