Before becoming an artist Deborah Eater trained as an experimental psychologist and worked for the New Jersey Department of Higher Education. Initially her creative drive found expression through artistic crafts, especially fiber arts. Her craft proficiency and experience as a community volunteer led to a position as an art teacher in a parochial school. Teaching provided additional opportunities to explore fine art and eventually to exhibit her own drawing, painting, and collage.
Deborah Eater’s signature medium is painterly collage. She collects found images clipped from magazines and catalogs, de-acidifies and buffers them, and cuts them into tiny pieces. Using each scrap of paper as a brushstroke, she “paints” nuanced abstract images with paper on thin wood panels. Arcs, spirals, and graceful curving lines appear repeatedly throughout her work.
A native of Pennsylvania, Deborah Eater resides in suburban Philadelphia. She is a member of the Arts and Cultural Council of Bucks County, the New Hope Arts League, the Artists Alliance, and the National Collage Society. She gives collage workshops and teaches classes in drawing and mixed media as a member of Artists at the Barn in Langhorne, PA.
While transitioning from crafts to fine art, Deborah Eater won numerous awards at the Middletown Grange Fair for collage, drawing, and painting. More recently her work has won prizes in shows at Fleisher Art Memorial, Stover Mill Gallery, and the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts. She has appeared in juried exhibitions in galleries throughout eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey – including the Sketch Club in Philadelphia, PA and Ellarslie Museum in Trenton, NJ – as well as juried exhibits of the National Collage Society.
